BBVA Exhibitions Hall, Madrid From 8 October through 7 December 2008 The Abbey of Montserrat, founded in 1025 by the Abbot Oliba, houses the Monastery Museum and its five distinct collections consisting of over thirteen hundred pieces: Archaeology of the Biblical East –objects from the cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Cyprus, and the Holy Land; Goldsmithing –set of liturgical objects from the fifteenth to twentieth century; Ancient Painting –thirteenth to eighteenth century; Modern Painting and Sculpture; and Nigra Sum –iconography of the Virgen of Montserrat. Most pieces were donated by churchgoers over the years. The exhibition, curated by Museum Director Josep de C. Laplana, presents a set of one hundred pieces selected from its collection of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. The oldest works, from the fifteenth to eighteenth century, are by Berruguete, Caravaggio, Tiepolo, and Rembrandt. The nineteenth century is represented with paintings by Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Fortuny, Regoyos, Rusiñol, Ramón Casas, Nonell, and Mir. Among the notable twentieth-century works are pieces by Sunyer, Torres-García, Juan Gris, Mompou, Dalí, Picasso, Roualt, and Poliakoff.
