BBVA Banco Francés promotes education for young people with low income in Argentina
12 August 2009
The Integration Grants Program set up by BBVA Banco Francés has awarded 73 additional grants to students at a school in Mendoza (Argentina). In 2008, this program awarded more than 800 grants for young people, with an investment of over 2 million pesos. BBVA Banco Francés is planning to award 878 grants this year in different Argentinean towns.

In this context, BBVA Banco Francés has awarded 20 new grants to students at the Padre José María Llorens School in Mendoza (Argentina), a province that has received a total of 73 grants.

The goals of the Integration Grants Program are the incorporation and continued presence of young people with low income in the secondary education system, while having the scholarship holders and their families administer the grants through a banking product, thus facilitating their inclusion in the financial system.

The program seeks to reduce student desertion, absenteeism and repetition rates, promote comprehensive education of young people, raise their academic performance, help their families in the schooling process, and further the fundamental values of education and personal effort.

The grant consists of a money allowance that is made available to the beneficiary directly through a rechargeable card. It also includes the assistance of a tutor for the scholarship holder. This customized monitoring promotes the participation and commitment of the students and their families throughout the education process.

The Integration Grants Program is targeted at young people aged 12-19 from families with low income who are within the formal education system at risk of deserting school or who are outside the education system and require technical skills in order to access the labor market.

Grants awarded

The Integration Grants Program was set up in 2007 with the award of 172 grants. In 2008 it was expanded to assist 802 young people, and in 2009 it plans to reach 878 students from 15 Argentinean towns.

In addition, this program, which has been declared of National Educational Interest by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Argentina, is supported by associated NGOs. These organizations, together with the coordination provided by the Banco Francés Foundation, identify the potential candidates, draw up a shortlist, assist the scholarship holder through a tutor, prepare regular reports on the student's performance, verify the direct and indirect benefits, and make arrangements with stores in the town.
