Volunteers from BBVA Panama promote ethical values and environmental protection
7 July 2009
Childhood, education and the environment are the three pillars of action that comprise the program of corporate volunteers of BBVA Panama for 2009.

The purpose of the program is to complement and to further develop the "Children Forward" Integration Grants Program. The program will award schooling grants to the winners of the Drawing, Oratory and Drama Competition, organized by the Association of Guadalupan Ladies of Panama, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

The participants in the competition are children and young students whose schools, some of which are located in areas that are difficult to reach, have limited educational resources. The goal of the program is to use a variety of artistic fields to promote civic, ethical and human values in the children of Panama.

Prior to the competition, BBVA Panama volunteers will participate in visits to more than 300 schools, with over one hundred thousand students across the country, to provide information regarding this activity and to motivate the participation of the children. In addition, branch representatives will also form a part of the jury in the provincial competitions, the winners of which will go on to the national phase of the competition.
By awarding these grants, BBVA Panama covers the two first pillars of action: Childhood and education.

Paint it green

For BBVA Panama, caring for natural resources is not a campaign slogan, but rather a need to contribute to the social benefit of all. This is why it takes the lead by putting initiatives into place to raise the population’s awareness of the effects of climate change and the importance of preserving the environment.
Over its 77,052 square kilometers, Panama contains one of the most biodiverse areas of the entire planet.  The country has the only two biological corridors in the world, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans: The Tampón de Darién and the forest corridor of the channel shoreline. Nonetheless, Panama’s forest acreage has been reduced by 40% in the last 50 years, with average deforestation at 47,000 hectares every year and the subsequent loss of habitat and species.

To raise the awareness of this reality and to motivate the recovery and maintenance of the ecosystem is the goal of "Adopt a tree today and tomorrow you will have a forest", an initiative that attempts to generate a commitment towards preservation of each volunteer by adopting a sprout and then planting it in the Summit National Park, located in the capital city, as well as in other parks in the interior of the Republic.
BBVA Panama’s volunteer program is another of the social action activities currently being carried out by the company, and therefore in compliance with its principle of Corporate Social Responsibility.
