BBVA has improved its position in the exclusive Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
10 September 2009
For yet another year, BBVA holds a privileged position in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). In the three dimensions analysed, (economic, environmental and social) BBVA ranks far above the financial industry average. Of the 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Index, only 10% are included in the DJSI.
The DJSI indexes include the leading companies in terms of their sustainability as regards economic, social and environmental performance. BBVA has been included in these indexes since 2001, when it became part of the DJSI World (on a global scale), and since 2005 in the DJSI Stoxx (pan-European sustainability reference) and in the DJSI Euro Stoxx (Euro zone). BBVA mejora su posición en los exclusivos índices de sostenibilidad de Dow Jones

BBVA has improved its overall ranking, and is now 55% above the average for the sector and only 12% below the best qualified. In the case of the economic dimension, it scored 90%, whereas the financial sector average stands at 63%; as for the environmental dimension, it recorded 63%, with the average for the financial sector being 37%; and, as regards the social dimension, it was awarded 77%, as opposed to 46% for the sector average.

Of the 2,540 companies included in the Dow Jones Global Index, only 10% are in the DJSI, coming from 27 countries and from 53 different sectors of activity. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index rewards its companies’ best practices in corporate responsibility. The annual review for maintaining a position in these indexes is based on a broad analysis of criteria on matters relevant to corporate responsibility and sustainability, such as corporate governance, risk management, brand management, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards or labour practices. This analysis is carried out through an external and independent agency, SAM, and reviewed by the external verifier, Deloitte.

The DJSI came into being in 1999 and, since then, it has become a global exponent of socially responsible investment (SRI). Best practices in social, environmental and corporate governance matters are a good indicator of the quality of management and governance of equity securities for investors and, therefore, a variable to be taken into account when choosing investment portfolios.

Investment companies throughout the world are currently managing a volume of over 8 billion dollars linked to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, with a considerable increase on 2008.

The improvement in the position in this strict index mirrors BBVA’s firm commitment to contributing to fostering sustainable development and socially responsible investment (SRI) as part of its corporate responsibility policy.
