BBVA continues to train senior executives in environmental risk management and assessment
11 September 2009
BBVA and the firm eco-management, a specialist in environmental training at the highest level, have announced the second edition of a dedicated course on environmental assessment and management. The programme is a result of a partnership agreement that will see senior executives and technical staff trained in the new regulatory framework introduced by the environmental responsibility system. According to experts, this is arguably the most important legislation enacted in the last twenty years within the field of environmental law.

“At BBVA, we have decided to take a step forward and further the training of those people who, from the different economic players involved, are required to take decisions based on an assessment of the environmental risks of a specific industrial activity”, explained Antoni Ballabriga, head of Corporate Responsibility and Reputation at BBVA.

On 23 April this year, a regulation came into force that partially develops Spain’s Law 26/2007 on Environmental Responsibility. Following the introduction of this regulation, the most important part of the new system of responsibility can now be considered to be fully applicable.

BBVA continúa formando a directivos en evaluación y gestión del riesgo ambiental

The system of environmental responsibility affects a very wide range of economic activities, which will henceforth be required to conduct an economic analysis and assessment of their environmental risks before starting up, as well as subscribe a financial guarantee in order to respond to any possible damages they may cause to natural resources. Environmental risk has therefore become a tangible reality, assessed in economic terms, which will become a core component of the risk profile of economic activities.

Dedicated programme on risk assessment and management

To be held in Madrid over four days, the second edition of the dedicated programme on environmental risk assessment and management, the first of its kind to be organised in Spain, is to start on 15 October. It will provide comprehensive information on all the system’s legal aspects, the drafting and interpretation of environmental risk reports, their economic assessment, the criteria for their management and the most appropriate decision-making in each case, as well as the assessment of these risks in capital markets.

The training addresses practical cases and has a written component. The course will be taught by leading experts in each one of these fields, from institutions such as the University of Alcalá, Uría & Menéndez, Willis España, el Pool Español de Riesgos Ambientales (The Spanish Environmental Risk Pool), Ferrovial, Aenor and Analistas Internacionales de Sostenibilidad (AIS).
