I don’t have words to describe the sadness I’ve felt the past few days. The killings of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery have reverberated through the bank’s communities like a shockwave, amplifying the ongoing, anguished suffering of Black men and women across the country and acting as a tipping point for calls for change.
I want you to know that BBVA stands side-by-side with our Black employees, customers, and communities. We are also mindful of our responsibility to listen to all the needs of those communities as we stand in solidarity with those who are experiencing oppression. We are committed to doing everything we can to support the fight for equity and social justice at every level.
BBVA has a long history of creating opportunities for all communities across its footprint, and will continue to do so, especially during this time of anger, grief and frustration. So much of the work that we’ve done as a bank in the areas of diversity and inclusion has shown how important it is to elevate voices of the underserved and unheard —and that’s never been more true than now. That’s also why we, as an organization, will continue to look for ways to contribute, both with our resources and our expertise, and help make a difference in the communities we serve.
As long as there is inequality in the world, our work as people is never done. In the words of Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” We are dedicated to listening to, learning from, and supporting those who are suffering.
