After seven years of negotiations, the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement, CETA, has entered into force provisionally. Under this bilateral agreement, the most ambitious signed to date by Brussels, most custom duties levied on trade flows between both countries will be scrapped.

The R3 consortium is working with 12 financial institutions –including BBVA– and TradeIX in an initiative that aims to re-design the trade finance infrastructure through the use of distributed ledger technology, or DLT.
BBVA launches Urban Discovery, an interactive tool open to everyone that analyzes the cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Mexico City through the prism of their commercial activity. The analysis led to the creation of new maps that redraw urban borders and identify the most touristic and residential areas or those where young people go shopping.
Madrid tourists spend more near monuments and museums than those in Barcelona. People living in Vila de Gràcia in Barcelona have the same lifestyle as those in the Madrid neighborhood of Malasaña. Sant Antoni and Poble Sec are places that are popular to go out to dinner and then for a drink, and in Madrid, the Lavapies neighborhood is undergoing a transformation toward more cultural activity.

However, it does not seem that this actually reflects the tone among the heads of state. The main point of disagreement was around the U.S. position on climate change. 46 years ago, in 1971, a group of business leaders reunited under the patronage of the European Comission and some industrial associations. The economist Klaus Schwab chaired the first meeting, with 440 attendants from more than 30 countries in Davos, Switzerland. In this reunion, the European Economic Forum was founded as a non-profit organization with its headquarters in Geneva.

BBVA is rolling out, in partnership with BBVA Data & Analytics, a new service for merchants, inaugurating a new way of banking: Commerce360, a web tool that turns anonymized and aggregate data from purchases paid for by customers with a BBVA card in a physical POS terminal into useful data for business customers. Through this application, merchants will be able to access a set of statistical indicators, describing the economic activity of both their businesses, their customers and the area in which they operates. This information will allow them to design plans intended to drive their businesses’ and marketing strategies’ profitability.

The U.S. is the largest recipient of Spanish exports outside of the EU, the country with the greatest investment in Spain and the third-largest destination of our investments in the world. This privileged economic and trade relationship has become stronger in recent years and has helped create thousands of jobs in Spain.
93% of the companies that export to the U.S. are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and they are responsible for 35% of all sales to this country (if large companies’ value chain is included this percentage increases to 50%). The prominence of SMEs in the Spanish and European economies means governments need to enact measures that give them more opportunities to grow locally, regionally, nationally, as well as across the EU and the rest of the world.

During his address in Bilbao, during the conference organized by Elkargi SGR, BBVA Executive Director remarked that “the Spanish economy is managing to keep high growth rates despite global and local uncertainties.” He defended the need for greater EU-wide integration and the implementation of free trade agreements – such as the TTIP which the US and EU are currently negotiating – as levers for economic stability and growth inside and outside Spain.
