Today, BBVA presented the Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza as its new global brand ambassador. The 21-year old is currently ranked 20th by the WTA, the highest spot she’s reached so far, crowning an excellent season in which she defeated the number 1 and 2 ranked players, Serena Williams and Simona Halep, and ended the year strong by participating in the WTA Finals Tournament in the doubles category.

Garbiñe Muguruza joins an International cast of BBVA ambassadors, comprised of some of the most outstanding figures in the world of sports and culture, which includes soccer players such as Iker Casillas, Andrés Iniesta, Radamel Falcao and Claudio Bravo, NBA stars Kevin Durant, James Harden, Chandler Parsons and Kawhi Leonard, the mountain climber Carlos Soria, the Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio or the brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca, chefs and owners of the El Celler de Can Roca restaurant.

“It is a great pleasure to join such a prestigious list of athletes and personalities. I would like to thank BBVA for thinking of me,” said Garbiñe Muguruza. “I hope to attain the same level as all the others, although it will undoubtedly be a tough challenge. This has been a very important year in my career, but I am confident the coming years will be even better.”

Ignacio Moliner, head of Communication and Brand at BBVA, asserted that “we at BBVA are excited to add Garbiñe to our team of ambassadors. This is a young and successful woman, whose values of hard work and the pursuit of excellence are a perfect fit for our mission. We are going to help her meet the challenges she has set for herself, which is none other than becoming the number one women’s tennis player in the world.”

Miguel Cardenal, Spain’s Secretary of State for Sport, attended the presentation where he predicted a “bright future” for the rising star: “Women’s sports in Spain are gaining tremendous importance. Garbiñe is undoubtedly one of our most important athletes, and one of our most promising international stars. I think she has a great future ahead of her,” said Cardenal.
