Reduced inequalities

Although male stereotypes dominate science and technology, the reality is that these areas are becoming increasingly diverse and more women are gradually landing technical jobs. Today, February 11, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, four professionals from BBVA’s Engineering and Organization unit share their views on how to tear down barriers and get young girls more interested in tech jobs.

Between October 2019 and June 2020 women lost jobs at a greater rate than men, while the employment recovery rate in the third quarter of 2020 was slightly higher for men, widening the gender gap. These are some of the key takeaways of BBVA Research’s ‘Gender diversity and training’ paper. According to the report, published on the occasion of BBVA’s diversity workshop (Diversity Days), training is one of the essential factors to reversing this situation and boosting women’s participation in the digital economy, a sector that’s recovering at a faster pace.

For yet another year, BBVA renewed its commitment to diversity and inclusion and is named one of the Top 30 Spanish companies with the best practices in the field. It was reported in the 2021 VariableD Report from Intrama’s ECDI Network, comprised of companies committed to diversity and inclusion. The organization presented its conclusions at the 2020 FactorW Diversity Summit which is the largest national congress on this matter.

Carlos Torres Vila participated in an event sponsored by the BBVA Microfinance Foundation, entitled ‘Unstoppable women: Challenges to and achievements of reinvention in times of crisis’. The event, chaired by Queen Letizia of Spain, shone the spotlight on the work of Latin American women entrepreneurs and technology’s key role in propping up their resilience against the economic impact of the pandemic. Development experts from organizations such as SEGIB (Ibero-American General Secretariat), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), UN Women and representatives of technology companies such as Google also took part in the event.

In 1975, Spain abolished the legal authorization that all married women needed in order to be able to work, travel abroad, or own property. Six years prior, Banco de Bilbao had made history by launching a campaign targeting women. Using the slogan “A bank that’s concerned about us women?” the bank took steps to provide women with financial and business advisory services as well as helping them take control of certain banking transactions, without requiring the consent of a legal guardian.

Fundación Diversidad‘s initiative, promoted by Fundación Alares, aims to foster inclusion and equal job and promotion opportunities at the workplace, and to open a forum where participating companies can share good practices. Clara Barrabés, head of the Diversity and Inclusion project, BBVA Talent & Culture Area, signed the document that confirms BBVA as a company committed to diversity, during an event that took place at the European Commissions’ Madrid headquarters.
