Shareholders' meeting
BBVA’s shareholders gift for the Annual General Meeting will be given to charitable causes
In order to help alleviate the effects of COVID-19 on the most vulnerable, BBVA will make a charitable contribution in Spain in replacement of the traditional gift given to shareholders for the Annual General Meeting. It will be the shareholders who vote on which of four causes they prefer for the donation from this gift: social inclusion, education, health and people with disabilities.

For this reason, the 51st edition of the World Economic Forum (World Economic Forum, WEF) will be held in two phases: An virtual one in January and another one, face-to-face, in August. The summit will convene politicians, businessmen and representatives of social and cultural organizations at a crucial time for the world, under the tagline ‘The Great Reset‘.

BBVA’s emblematic headquarters building in Madrid will be lit with a black ribbon for the 10 day mourning period decreed by the Spanish government, which began yesterday. The bank, which has devoted its efforts to help combat the health emergency, is therefore joining the tribute to the victims of the disease.

On Tuesday March 31st, health care supplies to be used in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic arrived at the Zaragoza airport in northern Spain. The supplies represent a portion of the material that BBVA has secured as a donation for Spain’s health care authorities. The consignment, coming from China, consists of 753 ventilators with an additional 700 surgical masks to be used with the ventilators. A flight carrying additional equipment purchased by the bank also landed in Barcelona on Saturday, with 260 ventilators. The rest of the bank’s donated equipment is expected to arrive shortly. This is the first delivery from BBVA’s committed €35 million in the fight against the virus in all countries where it operates.

BBVA has launched a campaign for employees to do their part to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees who wish to do so, can join this cause through the campaign ‘Your contribution is worth double’ in which the bank will contribute an additional euro for every euro donated by employees.

More than 2,600 BBVA USA employees participated in the bank’s annual Week of Service during the week of Oct. 7. Employees across the bank’s footprint participated in 227 events, including Habitat for Humanity projects, food bank initiatives, community clean up efforts, and financial education workshops for individuals and small businesses. Their efforts generated more than 8,000 volunteer hours across the bank’s footprint.

Hurricane Harvey, one of the most damaging hurricanes in U.S. history, might have put on a show during its destructive performance across Texas, but the philanthropic efforts of BBVA Compass employees also took center stage. Although the storm made a costly appearance, the bank’s team members demonstrated how the invaluable impact of helping others could be enough to outlast the the storm’s moment of fame.
BBVA Group Executive Chairman Francisco González sent a message of solidarity to Mexico on behalf of the Group after the recent earthquakes. “Mexico’s response in the wake of these natural disasters should be an inspiration to all, it has been exemplary,” said Francisco González during his visit to Mexico City, where he paid tribute to the country’s strength and reaffirmed BBVA’s commitment to Mexico, especially at times like this.

When a group of employees from BBVA Spain considered covering the nearly 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago (the pilgrimage to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela) by bicycle, they could have done it like almost everyone else: with a small group of friends, taking a week or more, and enjoying daily breaks. But instead, they managed to gather more than 150 people and complete the entire journey in just three days without stopping. And all for a good cause.

BBVA Executive Chairman Francisco González has reinforced the Group’s commitment to the U.S. after the most recent natural disasters. “We’re going to redouble our commitment to those affected through a number of actions,” he explained. In Houston, where he met with the city’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, he gave a message of solidarity on behalf of the entire BBVA Group. Francisco González also announced that he is going to visit Mexico City in the coming days to see first-hand the damages caused by the Sept. 19 earthquake.

The ninth annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will be broadcast nationally for the first time in an effort to help raise as much money as possible for this year’s nonprofit beneficiary: the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.
Branches in Southeast and Central Alabama including Dothan, Eufaula, Montgomery and Auburn/Opelika closed at 12:30pm today, Monday, September 11, due to inclement weather from Tropical Storm Irma.

Hurricane Harvey slammed into the South Texas coast in late August, bringing with it historic and unprecedented flooding and leaving a path of destruction in its wake, the exact toll of which will take weeks, months and likely even years to determine.
BBVA Compass, with nearly a quarter of its branches located in South Texas and its holding company headquarters located in Houston, felt the full force of Harvey’s lashing, with employees’ personal lives impacted, administrative buildings closed, branches closed and some flooded and ATMs knocked offline. But, as one of the top 25 largest U.S. commercial banks based on deposit market share, it was critical that operations continued with minimal interruption to serve all communities and clients.
