BBVA, first bank in Europe with a Tier IV Gold Operational Sustainability Certified Data Center

BBVA’s Data Processing Center (DPC) in Tres Cantos (Madrid) has been awarded the Tier IV Gold Certification of Operational Sustainability from the Uptime Institute. This is its highest rating in operational sustainability, which makes BBVA the first bank with such advanced installations in Europe.

This DPC already boasts Tier IV Certification of Design Documents and Constructed Facility for its construction and design, which puts BBVA on the cutting edge of the sector.

The Tier IV Gold Certification of Operational Sustainability, which has only been awarded to four other companies in the entire world, verifies that the DPC en Tres Cantos has the specialized staff and a catalogue of procedures that will enable it to properly handle setbacks in the facility’s daily operations.

In the last year, BBVA’s Technology teams have designed the strategies to respond to breakdowns at the center and, furthermore, the maintenance workers have taken training courses as a prior step to obtaining the certification.

The Tier IV Gold Certification of Operational Sustainability is renewed every three years to ensure that the catalogue of procedures is updated and that an effective employee training plan is in place.

“BBVA has decided to build a network of cutting-edge data centers in order to stay ahead of the new regulatory changes, beef up its security and guarantee the Group’s future growth, as well as respond to the technological challenges that will allow BBVA to be on the cutting edge of the sector”, said Sergio Salvador, head of Technology and Security at BBVA. “The Tier IV Gold Certification of Operational Sustainability is important because it attest to our commitment to operational reliability, security and sustainability”

BBVA’s DPC in Tres Cantos forms part of the Group’s plan to build a network of 4 state-of-the-art data centers, 2 in Madrid and 2 in Mexico, which will operate a Business Recovery Services model (BRS). The first DPC in Madrid is already operational (2011) and the first one in Mexico will be operational in 2015. BBVA’s DPCs process 260 million transactions daily in real time and they will be able to process 1 billion a day in 2016".
