BBVA USA employees go green

BBVA USA Business Banking Relationship Manager Jeffrey Silva and his son Zane have been on a mission to clean up their part of their hometown of Las Cruces.

Every night for the past 15 days, the duo has filled bucket upon bucket with discarded waste along Las Cruces Dam, and they don’t intend to stop anytime soon.

“I am very proud to be part of BBVA USA and its sustainability initiatives,” said Silva. “As a father, I understand the importance of helping create a sustainable earth for generations to come and am grateful that BBVA and my community allow us to make a difference.”

Silva: As a father, I understand the importance of helping create a sustainable earth for generations to come.

Silva is part of BBVA USA’s newly minted Green Team, an initiative started in April with the purpose of promoting a culture of sustainability in the workplace and in team member communities. The effort grew out of the bank’s strategic priorities, one of which was focused around sustainability and how the bank could help smooth the transition to a more sustainable future.

As part of the bank’s Green Team, BBVA employees encourage and engage other team members in sustainable initiatives like Silva’s that positively impact the environment and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Green Team’s activities vary but can include virtual volunteer activities, individual in-person activities, educational events, internal and external campaigns, employee challenges, webinars and meetings.

Recently, in celebration of Earth Day, the Green Team Working Group hosted an educational webinar with 120 attendees and kicked off the Earth Day Recycling challenge with more than 150 people participating. Collectively, employees recycled more than 3,600 lbs. of paper, plastic, glass and metal items between April 19 and 25.

Ultimately, the team hopes to record 1,000 hours of environmental sustainable impact by the end of 2021.

Campos: After much research and coordination, we’re proud to have officially launched this initiative with 67 designated Green Team Representatives across the BBVA USA footprint.

“Several colleagues and I wanted to bring more awareness to sustainable practices in the workplace and encourage employees to learn and apply these practices,” said BBVA USA Employee Involvement Officer Edith Campos. “After much research and coordination, we’re proud to have officially launched this initiative with 67 designated Green Team Representatives across the BBVA USA footprint. We know with a little dedication and effort we can have a real impact - both in awareness of environmental sustainability and employee engagement in environmentally-oriented activities.”
