BBVA Demonstrates its First Conversational App Concept Connected to ChatGPT for Italy and Germany

BBVA’s digital banks in Europe are exploring what could become the first banking app in the world natively integrated within ChatGPT, marking a bold step forward in how financial services integrate with conversational AI. This demonstration shows how people will be able to discover BBVA’s products and services in Italy and Germany through a dedicated BBVA app built directly into OpenAI’s conversational assistant.

With this initiative, BBVA aims to anticipate the new ways in which customers will interact digitally. ChatGPT has become one of the main channels for seeking information online, and BBVA wants to be present where its customers already are.

Using this new app, people can obtain information about the bank’s offering, such as account conditions, types of cards, or savings products, simply by asking questions in natural language. The concept was demonstrated during the event on December 3, in Milan, marking the fourth anniversary of BBVA Italy.

The initial version of the app is designed to handle informational queries about BBVA’s products and services in Italy and Germany. Over time, it is envisaged that the experience will evolve into a digital companion, empowering customers to navigate key financial moments in their life, with clear and conversational guidelines that make complex decisions simple, and reflect BBVA’s spirit of innovation.

“Our digital banks in Italy and Germany have set new standards for innovation. Bringing BBVA into ChatGPT will mark the start of a new chapter, one where AI becomes part of everyday banking, helping customers navigate their financial lives in a more natural and intelligent way,” said Murat Kalkan, Global Head of Digital Banks at BBVA.

This initiative is the result of the strategic collaboration between BBVA and OpenAI, which has positioned the bank as a global leader in the adoption of generative artificial intelligence. In addition to participating in the testing of the new GPT-5 model, BBVA recently expanded its deployment to 11,000 ChatGPT Enterprise licenses for employees, fostering the use of AI to enhance productivity and accelerate internal innovation.

“BBVA’s exploration places it among the first banks in the world to experiment with banking services within ChatGPT. With this demonstration, BBVA continues to show it is one of the most forward-thinking companies in shaping the future of banking with the most advanced technologies,” says Matt Weaver, Head of EMEA Solutions Engineering at OpenAI.

Apps are available today to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside of the EU. OpenAI previously announced that it expects to bring apps to EU users soon and will share further details on how to submit apps for review by the end of the year.

With this milestone, BBVA Italy and BBVA Germany, the two digital banks through which BBVA Group is expanding its presence in Europe, position themselves at the forefront of innovation in digital financial services, preparing for the future release of apps in ChatGPT in the region.
