BBVA launches a credit card in Germany and expands its financial products offering
BBVA Germany is launching its first credit card for customers in Germany in partnership with Mastercard. This new card is free for active users and offers an initial six-month fee-free trial period for new cardholders to experience its benefits without a fee, while delivering state-of-the-art security features and no foreign exchange fees (FX) worldwide. The launch highlights what sets BBVA apart from other digital banks: leveraging the scale and expertise of the BBVA Group, one of the largest banking groups in the world.
The launch responds to growing demand in Germany for straightforward credit card products that combine transparent pricing, strong security and everyday value. At launch, customers who contract the card will additionally receive 5% cashback on online purchases and travel spending for six months, with a total benefit of up to €150.
“With our new credit card, we are not just complementing our daily banking offering, but also reinforcing our ambition to become our clients' primary bank”, says Jürgen von der Lehr, Head of Digital Bank Germany at BBVA. “It was designed to integrate seamlessly into our customers' daily lives while specifically addressing the needs of travelers. The card offers an advanced digital experience and ensures the highest level of security through our unique safety features. And this is just the beginning – we will continuously enhance the card with new features to make travelling even easier.”
"With the credit card, we are taking another important step towards a complete banking offering in Germany," says Raúl Quintana del Val, Head of Payments & Daily Banking at BBVA Digital Banks. "The fact that we, as a digital bank, can offer a real credit card on these terms is no coincidence – it is the result of our strength as a global banking group. We combine the best of both worlds: the simplicity, innovation and speed of a digital bank with the substance and reliability of one of Europe's largest financial institutions."
Up to €150 Cashback for Online Shopping and Travel
At launch, BBVA is offering an exclusive deal until September 30, 2026: 5% cashback for six months, with a maximum benefit of €150, equivalent to €25 per month. The cashback applies to two categories: online purchases as well as selected travel-related bookings and services, from flights and hotels to car rentals and train tickets, through to transfers and leisure attractions. The BBVA credit card rewards customers both in their everyday lives and when travelling. Cashback is activated with the first card transaction, which must take place within 90 days of signing the contract, and is paid out automatically one day after the monthly statement is settled.
The BBVA credit card is free for everyone in the first six months of ownership. After that, it remains free with active use: customers who spend at least €500 per month with the card or maintain an active installment plan pay no base fee. A maintenance fee of €2 per month applies in months with lower usage.
The card also offers attractive everyday terms designed for both domestic and international spending: customers pay no foreign exchange fees worldwide, making the card particularly convenient for travel outside the eurozone. The card comes with an effective annual interest rate of 13.99%. Customers can choose to settle their monthly statement in a single payment or pay it back in flexible installments.
Security on a New Level
Security has been central to BBVA's product philosophy since the launch of the debit card, and this continues with the credit card, both in-store and online. For physical purchases, the card carries no printed numbers – neither the card number nor the CVV are printed on the physical card, protecting customers from card data thefts if the card is lost or stolen. For online purchases, a dynamic CVV changes automatically every 7 minutes and with every new purchase within the app, making intercepted card details instantly useless and preventing misuse. For online purchases, BBVA offers particularly comprehensive support for chargebacks and assists customers in many cases beyond the standard deadlines, in some cases up to 180 days after the transaction.
“BBVA distills modern banking into its essence: digital, transparent and secure,” says Nikolaus Trzeschan, Country Manager Mastercard Germany. “Together, we are enabling a credit card that combines attractive terms with state-of-the-art security based on our global Mastercard network. A numberless design and dynamic CVV show how simple and secure paying can be today.”
At launch, the credit card is exclusively available to existing BBVA customers as a cross-sell product who have held one of BBVA's free current accounts for at least six months and are prequalified based on BBVA’s credit assessment criteria. In the coming months, availability will be expanded gradually to a broader range of customers.
The credit card complements BBVA’s broader offer in Germany, which includes a free current account with an attractive long-term remuneration model, including 3% p.a. for the first 6 months on eligible balances. Together, these elements underline BBVA’s ambition to build a simple, secure and rewarding digital banking experience for customers in Germany over the long term.
