Small Places LLC wins “The Pitch” pres. by BBVA Compass and Houston Dynamo

Small Places LLC has won the second installment of “The Pitch” from BBVA Compass and the Houston Dynamo, the club and the bank announced today.

Small Places focuses on making agriculture in an urban setting sustainable, supportive of its community, and profitable. They are working to develop a business model that is diverse and robust to create a productive and empowering farm within Houston’s city limits.

"We want to thank the Houston Dynamo and BBVA Compass for providing opportunities to small businesses in Houston through the Pitch Competition. We want to thank all those that voted for us and are extremely humbled by the outpouring of support we have received,” said Small Places Founder and Director of Operations Daniel Garcia-Prats. “We wish continued success to Circular Board, Soccerchik and Brain Check whose unique and innovative work showcases the tremendous impact small businesses are having in our city. We feel honored and inspired to continue serving our community and making them proud of all that is Houston Grown."

Located on Houston’s East Side, Small Places grows organic herbs, fruits and vegetables to be sold to individuals and restaurants directly from its farm and area farmers markets. In addition to providing healthy, sustainable and affordable food to its neighbors, the business also works to build relationships and to keep money in its immediate, neighborhood economy.

"Small businesses are significant components to communities on the rise. BBVA Compass understands this and is committed to their success," said BBVA Compass Houston CEO Mark Montgomery. "That's why we launched our "Year of Opportunity for Small Businesses" initiative, and why we're happy to contribute to a business that is doing so much for its community. Small businesses know that they can come to us for trusted advice, and together, we can create opportunities for a bright future. Congratulations to Small Places LLC - we're excited to invest in this bright, new opportunity with them."

The small business contest launched on May 1 in conjunction with Small Business Month as well as the start of the bank’s “Year of Opportunities for Small Businesses” initiative. Small businesses and start-ups were encouraged to submit a business plan describing why they have a bright future in their industry.

“On behalf of the Dynamo, I’d like to congratulate Daniel Garcia-Prats and Small Places LLC on this well-deserved honor,” said Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti. “We are pleased to work with BBVA Compass on another important Houston community initiative. The Pitch is among the many great community programs we have established over our five year partnership.”

On May 31, four finalists were selected from more than 130 submissions by a panel of judges from BBVA Compass, the Houston Dynamo, SCORE, Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the East End Chamber of Commerce.

Each of the finalists produced a short video about themselves, and Dynamo fans had the opportunity to log on to HoustonDynamo.com to watch the videos and select which business they felt should be the winner.

The winner will also be recognized on the field Friday, June 23 when the Dynamo take on their in-state rival FC Dallas at BBVA Compass Stadium.
