BBVA is set to resume on March 23 the execution of the extraordinary share buyback program of up to €3.96 billion that it announced on December 19¹. Following the completion of a first tranche of €1.5 billion, it will now begin executing the second tranche for an amount of up to €1 billion.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and BBVA signed two key agreements to boost green finance. The first is an EIB guarantee line of up to €380 million for BBVA to finance green projects. The second is an advisory agreement, under which the EIB will provide consulting support to BBVA to strengthen its capabilities in climate action and environmental sustainability.

As of 1 February 2026, BBVA Germany will move the first customers whose introductory offer is coming to an end to the variable interest model of their free current account. As part of its commitment to long-term remuneration with transparent conditions, the bank is setting the variable interest rate for the first quarter of 2026 at 2.0% p.a. This rate applies until 31 March 2026. The variable long-term interest rate is set for each quarter and communicated to customers in advance.

BBVA celebrated the fourth anniversary of its digital retail bank in Italy, which currently has over 800,000 customers and expects to reach one million in 2026. Since last November, BBVA Italy has increased its customer base by 35 percent, and has multiplied the financing granted to customers eightfold, including 1,800 mortgages. The success of the BBVA Italy model is driving the Group’s organic growth strategy across the rest of Europe, as CEO Onur Genç explained at a meeting with the media at the bank’s new offices in Milan. “Our priority is to consolidate our progress and ensure sustainable long-term growth: expanding our presence in key financial products, such as investments, and continuing to attract customers from traditional banks seeking a more modern experience”, Genç said.

During her presentation, she explained that BBVA’s strategy is predicated on the bank being one the leading players in each market in order to secure a competitive edge. She pointed to the profitability and value creation that the bank is achieving in 2025, which are paving the way toward its financial targets. BBVA’s unrivalled profitability will ultimately lead to strong capital generation that can be paid out to shareholders (up to €36 billion through 2028¹).

The three leading rating agencies have upgraded BBVA’s rating over the past three weeks. On Tuesday, Fitch upgraded the long-term senior preferred debt one notch, from A- to A. It also upgraded BBVA’s long-term issuer rating, from BBB+ to A-, with a stable outlook, among other improvements. This latest move joins the recent upgrades by S&P and Moody’s.

BBVA once again attended the ‘Digital Assets’ Forum organized by El Confidencial. For the eighth time, the event brought together the Spanish crypto ecosystem, which is starting to move beyond the experimentation phase and roll out real services following the entry into force of MiCA. In this context, BBVA has established itself as an experienced player, as it was the first traditional European bank to offer a cryptoasset service in Switzerland in 2021, and the first to offer it in Spain. Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has approved BBVA’s new offer for Banco Sabadell shareholders. The take-up period for Banco Sabadell shareholders began on September 8, 2025 and will end October 10, 2025. Banco Sabadell shareholders who take up the offer will receive one new BBVA share for every 4.8376 shares they tender. The new offer represents a 10 percent¹ increase over the previous offer, and is exceptionally attractive for Banco Sabadell shareholders, as it implies the highest share valuation in over a decade. BBVA has once again excelled in the stress test results published by the European Banking Authority (EBA) for the 2025-2027 period. This exercise takes place every two years and assesses banks’ ability to maintain minimum levels of capital and own funds in two scenarios: a baseline and an adverse scenario. In the baseline scenario, BBVA would generate 355 basis points of capital from December 2024 to December 2027, reaching a fully loaded CET1 ratio of 16.43 percent. In the adverse scenario, BBVA would lose 186 basis points of capital to reach a fully loaded CET1 ratio of 11.02 percent in December 2027. The impact of the adverse scenario on BBVA’s capital would be well below the average for the group of comparable European banks, demonstrating the Group’s strength and resilience.

The Bank of Spain has informed BBVA of its new minimum requirement for own funds and eligible liabilities (MREL), the regulatory framework that requires banks to have sufficient funds to absorb losses in case of crisis. Starting June 12, 2025, BBVA must maintain a buffer of 23.13 percent of the total risk-weighted assets (including the parent company, BBVA S.A and its subsidiaries in Europe). With an MREL ratio of 33.20 percent at the end of March 2025, the bank already far exceeds this threshold, and also meets the additional requirements for subordination and capital buffers.
