BBVA travels to Beijing with the Spanish delegation to support the international expansion of enterprises in Asia
The third meeting of the Spain–China Business Advisory Council (BAC), held in Beijing as part of the State visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain to China, once again highlighted the importance of economic dialogue between the two countries. BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) played an active role in the event, reaffirming its commitment to supporting enterprises in their international expansion and its role as a strategic financial partner in strengthening ties between Asia, Europe and Latin America.
The meeting was organised by CEOE, ICEX and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, and was attended by His Majesty the King of Spain, who headed the official delegation in Beijing. His Majesty King Felipe VI closed the event, which also featured remarks by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, and was attended by Spain’s Minister for the Economy, Trade and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, and China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Sheng Qiuping.
In this context, Pep Ferrís, Head of BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking in Asia, took part in the event on behalf of the bank and highlighted the Council’s role as a key platform for promoting economic collaboration and enterprise internationalisation: “It is an honour to represent BBVA at this event, which reflects a shared commitment to advancing economic cooperation between Spain and China. At BBVA, we are focused on supporting enterprises in their growth, helping them reach further through innovative and sustainable financial solutions that contribute to the development of more competitive economies.”

With a presence in Asia spanning more than four decades, starting with the opening of its offices in Beijing and Hong Kong in 1985, followed by its branch in Shanghai; BBVA has established a strategic position that enables it to support enterprises and institutions in their international growth and investment plans. During his remarks, Ferrís underlined BBVA CIB’s role as a global financial partner serving over 70,000 large enterprises as they expand both within and beyond their home markets. He also highlighted the bank’s ambition to be a leading player in Spain, the Americas and Turkey, as well as a key ally for Chinese companies in their internationalisation journey.
Sustainability is another key pillar of this strategy. In 2024, BBVA met ahead of schedule its goal of mobilising €300 billion in sustainable business and has now raised its target to €700 billion by 2029, in line with Spain and China’s priorities on energy transition and innovation.
“Spain and China are key players in the global challenge of the energy transition. At BBVA, we are committed to being an active part of this effort, supporting enterprises and institutions on the path toward a more innovative, competitive and sustainable future,” Ferrís concluded.
The Spain–China Business Advisory Council reaffirmed the importance of continuing to promote bilateral cooperation and economic dialogue between the two countries. As a trusted financial partner, BBVA CIB remains committed to supporting enterprises in their internationalisation and to contributing to the development of sustainable projects that strengthen collaboration between Spain, China and the broader Asian region.
