Garanti BBVA Issues €30 Million Green Bond to Support Climate Change Adaptation in Sustainable Agriculture
Garanti BBVA has issued a €30 million green bond with a maturity of one year and two days under its international funding program to support climate change adaptation and make sustainable agriculture more resilient.
The green bond was issued under the Garanti BBVA Sustainable Debt Finance Framework, with the proceeds earmarked for financing sustainable agriculture projects. Specifically, the funding will support organic and sustainable agricultural production and land management practices, efficient irrigation infrastructure and water management systems, measures to enhance climate change adaptation and make agricultural activities more resilient, and investments in agricultural infrastructure.
Commenting on the issuance, Mahmut Akten, CEO of Garanti BBVA, said: “At Garanti BBVA, we view sustainable finance as a key tool for supporting the transformation of Türkiye’s economy.”
He pointed to the strategic importance of the agricultural sector, both for ensuring food security and for adapting to the impacts of climate change, adding that the green bond will help finance climate adaptation in sustainable agriculture. With the effects of climate change becoming increasingly evident, he noted that investing in measures to strengthen the resilience of agricultural production is essential for the country’s future.
Akten also cited the bank’s growing commitment to sustainable finance, noting that Garanti BBVA had increased its sustainable finance target for the 2018–2029 period to TRY 3.5 trillion and had already achieved approximately TRY 1.3 trillion of that goal by the end of the first quarter of 2026. He added that the bank would continue to develop new sustainable funding sources while supporting the transformation of sustainable agriculture and the protection of natural resources.
By channeling the proceeds of its green bond issuances into the agricultural sector, Garanti BBVA provides financing for investment projects that help producers adapt to the impacts of climate change. Through its innovative sustainable finance products and solutions, the Bank continues to support Türkiye’s transition to a low-carbon, resilient, and inclusive economy. In line with its sustainable finance commitments, Garanti BBVA will continue to help finance projects focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, the circular economy, sustainable agriculture, and social impact.
