BBVA is providing sustainability training for 937 employees from 688 suppliers across 22 countries through the Capacity Building Program: Sustainable Suppliers. Participation linked to the bank has increased in 2026, with 58 percent growth in 2026 in enrolled individuals, a 65 percent increase in the number of suppliers and 69 percent growth in the number of countries compared with the previous year. The initiative is led by the United Nations Global Compact Spain, ICEX Spain Export and Investment and the ICO Foundation.
he figures for this edition of the program reflect a notable increase in BBVA participation, with the number of enrolled individuals rising from 593 to 937, the number of suppliers increasing from 418 to 688, and the number of countries expanding from 13 to 22. The growth stems from both the expansion of the program to include large supplier companies, having previously been aimed at SMEs only), and the bank’s enhanced outreach efforts.
The program offers free training to help supplier companies integrate sustainability criteria into their operations. This edition added new online sessions for both beginner and advanced levels, covering sustainability strategy, Scope 3 emissions accounting and the circular economy.
The Capacity Building Program: Sustainable Suppliers was launched in 2022 to provide training and tools for supplier companies, with a focus on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact.
In its four editions, the program has expanded its scope to reach 6,700 participating companies in the last round, up from 2,300 in the first edition and 5,200 in the previous one. The current edition has also surpassed 8,000 enrolled participants, including companies from 87 countries (compared to 72 the previous year) and is supported by 54 major Spanish companies, including BBVA, six more than the previous edition.
In addition, this edition included large supplier companies, which represent 24 percent of the total. The remaining 76 percent consists of small and medium sized companies (SMEs).
With this initiative, BBVA continues its efforts to support its suppliers in a context where supply chains are facing new demands for sustainability information and management. These efforts complement other training activities designed for suppliers, customers and employees, with which the bank aims to provide knowledge and tools needed to advance in the transition toward a more sustainable economy.
