United Nations Global Compact Selects BBVA’s Experience to Assess Supplier Sustainability
The United Nations Global Compact has selected BBVA’s experience implementing a sustainability assessment model as a case study for UN Academy, its global platform for corporate learning. In 2025, BBVA evaluated 5,200 suppliers using this model, compared to 4,600 in 2024.
BBVA’s experience is being incorporated into the UN Academy as a case study on how to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into internal management processes. In particular, the case study uses the model developed by the bank to assess its suppliers’ sustainability risk and apply proportionate monitoring within its procurement processes.
The model, which was implemented in 2023, makes it possible to classify suppliers according to their sustainability risk – low, medium or high – based on a common methodology across the Group. The evaluation covers environmental, social and governance aspects, including working conditions, respect for human and labor rights, as well as sustainability reporting and the application of sustainability standards throughout the supplier’s own supply chain.
In addition, BBVA complements the information provided by suppliers with external sources to strengthen analysis and obtain a more comprehensive view of possible risks. This approach seeks to support uniform, comparable and proportionate evaluation in the main geographies where the Group operates.
“Integrating sustainability into risk management and day-to-day procurement processes helps strengthen our procurement model. Our aim is to create a common sustainability risk management framework that allows us to assess suppliers consistently and apply proportionate monitoring,” said Francisco Lucas, Senior Procurement Manager at BBVA.
BBVA has participated in the United Nations Global Compact since 2002. The bank also promotes sustainability training through the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact, with the aim of supporting its suppliers to enhance their management capabilities and understanding the new requirements in this area.
Sustainability as a strategic priority for BBVA
Sustainability is one of BBVA’s strategic priorities, with a focus on three areas: climate, natural capital and inclusive growth. The bank has set a target to channel €700 billion into sustainable business between 2025 and 2029, according to the criteria established in its Sustainable Business Channeling Guide, after reaching its previous target of €300 billion in December 2024, one year ahead of schedule.
