Garanti BBVA launches a series of documentaries addressing the effects of climate change
SALT, Garanti BBVA’s cultural organization, is presenting ‘Is this Our Last Chance?’, a series of documentaries on the effects of climate change. It will be running at the walk-in cinema in SALT’s Beyoğlu facilities and can also be watched online at saltonline.org between February 29 and March 24.
The program, featuring seven documentaries from Türkiye, Palestine, Spain, Kenya, Denmark, Sweden and Germany, examines the effects of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystem resources, humankind and other forms of life.
A drastic decline in rainfall and soil erosion have had a profound effect on local communities in many parts of the world. It is now harder than ever to prevent human-induced ecological destruction. So is this our last chance? The 2024 program explores the relationships between humans and other forms of life amid changing climatic conditions, while focusing on the concepts of mourning, loss and repair. Stories from different countries illustrate how startlingly interconnected everything is across the planet.
The first documentary examines the culture of gathering resources in and around Bingöl in Türkiye. It includes interviews with scientists, researchers and locals, exploring topics such as the medicinal uses of wild plants and mushrooms, excessive consumption, and the destruction of nature. It will be screened on Thursday, February 29 at 19.00 at the walk-in cinema at SALT Beyoğlu, and can also be watched online at saltonline.org from March 1-3.

According to SALT General Manager Deniz Ova, cultural institutions play a key role in raising awareness about ecological crises and social transformations going on around the world. She also remarked that the climate-focused programs organized at SALT reflect the interests and priorities of the institution.
Murat Çağrı Süzer, Executive Vice President of Garanti BBVA, also shared his views on the program: “At Garanti BBVA we strive to add value to society by working to combat the climate crisis and foster inclusive growth. Together with Salt, of which we are the founder, we attach great importance to bringing the concept of ‘sustainability’ to the social agenda through art.”
The 2024 program was curated by Fatma Çolakoğlu and Eylül Şenses from Salt. With the support of Garanti BBVA, all films will be screened online via saltonline.org after the free screenings to be held at the walk-in cinema between February 29 and March 24. The films are only available in Türkiye and will be screened in their original language with Turkish subtitles.
