In Europe, 2018 has been off to a busy start in terms of regulation, with major changes that affect a broad range of industries, including the financial sector. First, in January, the second payments services directive came into force, while the new general data protection regulation (GDPR) will kick into force in May 25. Although the connection between both regulatory initiatives may not be evident, they pursue common goals: To allow citizens to control their personal data and increase security.

These awards seek to pay tribute to companies working to modernize and improving media in Europe.

When Frances Guthrie started at Compass Bank in 1964, no one had to explain to her what “one team” meant. “We only had 11 people,” she said. “And that was counting the mail carrier.” That was just one of the memories shared by Guthrie and about 30 other retired former team members at the inaugural BBVA Compass Alumni Community Luncheon in Birmingham, Ala. last month.

BBVA Group Executive Chairman Francisco González has been distinguished with the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, in the grade of Plaque. The Aztec Eagle is the highest distinction awarded by the Mexican government at international level. The award stands as a testament to  Francisco González’s outstanding career, "which has allowed to benefit Mexican society through projects in healthcare and education, stimulating young entrepreneurs in Mexico."
