BBVA channeled €82 billion into sustainable business in the first half of 2026. Spain accounted for approximately €26 billion of this amount. This activity allows clients to access financing and solutions for the energy transition, efficient resource use and social challenges. With this progress, the bank channeled a cumulative €216 billion toward its €700 billion target the 2025-2029 period.

Garanti BBVA has developed a new treasury solution to help companies trading with the European Union manage the carbon cost risk arising from potential price fluctuations in Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM¹) certificates through derivative products. As part of this initiative, Garanti BBVA introduced an early solution in Türkiye by structuring and executing a transaction to help Medcem Cement Group manage and hedge its CBAM-driven price risk. Through this innovative solution, Medcem Cement Group has gained greater predictability over its future CBAM certificate costs by managing a portion of the price risk associated with the CBAM certificates underlying the transaction today

The bank's most recent annual Sustainability Report underscores key achievements in its commitment to becoming climate positive from 2035, notably a 22% reduction in operational emissions concurrent with a period of record balance sheet growth.

BBVA Consumer Finance continues making strides in its goal to promote sustainable transportation in Spain. Currently, one in ten sustainable vehicles financed by the bank is contracted through digital channels, underscoring the success of a service that combines advice, financing and a catalogue of ‘ECO’ and ‘CERO’ vehicles, sourced exclusively from official dealerships. The adoption of digital channels has surpassed initial expectations and confirms the growing interest among customers in solutions that facilitate the transition toward a more efficient mobility model.

From January to August 2025, BBVA reached €3.1 billion in agrifood business, a 69 percent increase over the same period in 2024. Of this amount, €2.09 billion corresponded to sustainable business, with 82 percent YoY growth. BBVA announced these figures at Fruit Attraction, one of the world’s top fruit and vegetable trade fairs, held this week in Madrid.

As part of its efforts in sustainable finance, Garanti BBVA is to implement the Green Finance Specialist training course for some of its employees, in cooperation with the Green for Growth Fund (GGF) Technical Support Facility and the Renewable Energy Academy (RENAC). The course aims to increase the technical expertise of about 30 Garanti BBVA employees who work in different regions as loan officers, loan specialists and other related areas.

Investor appetite for sustainable products has been growing exponentially in recent years.  BBVA's Global Head of Responsible Business, Antoni Ballabriga, revealed that “This year $350 million in sustainable bonds and corporate loans will be issued around the world, 30 percent more than last year, according to data from the Institute of International Finance (IIF).” During the ‘Sustainable finance in the face of environmental challenges’ forum, organized by Spain’s National Association of Economists (Consejo General de Economistas), Ballabriga stressed that “there is still a lot to be done” and “one of the current challenges is to incorporate this trend into the SME and consumer markets.”
