“It's the determined action in the countries where this foundation is present, and above all, the real transformation in so many peoples' lives, that urge us to hope and strengthens us,” Her Majesty said during the ceremony held to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the BBVA Microfinance Foundation (BBVAMF). BBVA Chair Carlos Torres Vila said, "in recent years the Microfinance Foundation has made a commendable effort to bring digitalization and connectivity to microentrepreneurs and their communities, as a driver of development and a gateway to opportunities." The event also served as the occasion to premiere the documentary 'After the Rain,' a tribute to the courage and resilience of the more than six million vulnerable people that the Foundation has supported over these past fifteen years.

Andrés Hernández and his wife Carolina left their life in Venezuela in search of safety and economic stability. Like them, almost 7 million Venezuelans have had to abandon the country and are obligated to accept jobs for which they are overqualified, due to their lack of resources or lack of documentation. This was Andres’ reality when he arrived in Colombia. He drove taxis, worked in a nightclub and even joined a mariachi band. Four years later, the couple was able to start a business,Tu Refuerzo Escolar”, a support center for students.

The BBVA Microfinance Foundation (FMBBVA) is celebrating its anniversary. It was founded by BBVA in 2007 as a non-profit organization in the framework of the bank’s corporate social responsibility. With a €200 million endowment, FMBBVA aims to support people in situations of vulnerability with productive activities. In commemoration of this milestone, we spoke with Javier M. Flores, who has been the CEO of the foundation since 2010. With a law degree and MBA from the University of Houston (Texas, U.S.), he is in charge of strategy, executive management and supervision of the microfinance institutions in Latin America.

Garanti BBVA held the Turkish round of the world’s largest fintech competition, BBVA Open Talent, for the fourth time at the Impact Hub in Istanbul. Five startups reached the finals of the event, which encourages innovating businesses to submit cutting-edge creative projects that contribute to financial technology. Pisano was the event’s top prize winner and as such has qualified to attend the BBVA Open Summit in Madrid on October 24.

However, businesses enroll in the program for a number of reasons, including the possibility of being awarded a cash prize that will allow them increase their impact. For this reason, the new edition will continue providing access to investment, but with a different approach.

BBVA launches the sixth edition of its social entrepreneurship support program, which from now on will be global – it will be developed in Spain, the United States, Mexico, Turkey and Colombia –, will offer support to more companies and will adjust better to the reality of social entrepreneurs. BBVA Momentum channels its support through five initiatives: a training program; a strategic mentoring program; a network of entrepreneurs, customers and investors; collaboration to provide visibility to the companies; and, finally, funding.

Nobody wants to go into a care home. Based on this premise, Saraiva Senior, a project by Sacendi (a social and healthcare company that provides integrated services for the elderly in Pontevedra), aims to implement a new approach to care for the elderly. The company, a participant in BBVA Momentum, BBVA's support program aimed at social enterprises, is determined to change mindsets, promote a positive vision of aging and renew the traditional concept of the care home. The director of this social enterprise, Lucía Saborido, its associate director, Noelia López and its technical director, Ricardo Fra Otero, explain how.

Momentum, BBVA's program in support of social entrepreneurship, is today a benchmark in the sector. Since its first edition in 2011, it has driven the expansion process of 56 companies with high social impact in Spain, 30 in Mexico and six in Peru. Many of them have succeeded in making a niche for themselves in the market thanks to their pioneering products or new approaches to business.
