Javier Rodríguez Soler: “BBVA’s sectoral specialization is key to successfully managing decarbonization and supporting our clients”
Javier Rodríguez Soler has been heading up BBVA’s global Sustainability area since 2021 and in July 2023 he was also named global head of Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB), the wholesale banking area that serves the biggest clients (corporations, institutions, and the like). Combining growth and sustainability is one of its mantras. According to Javier, it is possible to grow and decarbonize at the same time, and BBVA is living proof of this. More precisely, he believes that “sectoral specialization is key to successfully managing decarbonization while supporting our clients.”

Luisa Gómez Bravo, Global Head of BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking, is in attendance at the World Economic Forum held in the Swiss city of Davos and was one of the speakers at a round table on the mergers and acquisitions market titled 'Will the M&A Boom Last?'. After a record year of M&A deals in 2021, the current economic scenario augurs a decline in this market, due to its high exposure to the international geopolitical context. Even so, mergers and acquisitions continue to offer great opportunities in infrastructure, ESG projects and investment in real assets.
Remote commerce has grown exponentially in recent years, a trend that has been driven by the pandemic. During lockdowns, ecommerce skyrocketed and payments via apps and cell phones grew at a dizzying rate. On top of this, new technologies were already favoring the emergence of new, more convenient payment methods and boosting e-commerce.

BBVA expands its range of sustainable products with a sustainability-linked interest rate swap
BBVA has executed its first sustainability-linked interest rate swap for the glass bottle design and manufacturing company Vidrala. The conditions of this product are tied to the company reducing its carbon footprint, and will allow it to transform variable flows into fixed flows, thus reducing the interest rate risk.

BBVA has been the global coordinator and sustainable co-agent of Iberdrola's new €2.5 billion multi-currency syndicated loan. This operation, which was linked to two sustainable indicators, constitutes an industry milestone as it´s referenced to Risk Free Rates (RFR), which replace LIBOR and which will serve as a model for future financing in Spain. It's also a unique transaction since Iberdrola has committed to donating part of its adjusted margin to sustainable projects.

Sustainable financing reaches the Spanish funeral services sector thanks to BBVA and Funespaña
BBVA and Funespaña formalized a sustainability-linked loan with KPI metrics, becoming the first case of sustainable financing in the Spanish funeral sector which will include three sustainability indicators. The seven-year financing in which the fixed interest rate that the company will pay depends on the fulfillment of three indicators, one environmental and two social. To carry out the operation the bank acted as a sustainable coordinator and Valora as a sustainable consultant.
